Galileo's Focus

Galileo's Focus
At Galileo the school focuses on what they call icons. Some of the icons include depth and complexity. These concepts are geared towards everyday subject matter and digging deeper past basic conversation. The idea is to give students the opportunity to expand beyond by offering real life examples and experiences. One way of giving students this opportunity is through educational based field trips. For instance, the 5th and 6th graders at Galileo are about to attend a week long science camp in which the students are able to experience hands on science activities, as well as other things like kayaking and interaction with wildlife. The first graders at Galileo have been able to go to apple orchards where they can experience the life cycles of apple and do things like make cider. Other activities students are able to participate in are whale watching, visiting different museums, going to the Joshua Tree National Park, just to name a few.
By offering students the experiences of seeing first hand what they are learning allows them to get different context and experience, they are able to tie in their understanding and remember better. multiple perspectives: As history can often times be viewed through one lens, the students practice the concept of looking at a specific event in history through someone else’s eyes to try to have a different understanding of what other may have been thinking during that event. Interpret things differently, branching out on the most basic level of understanding; research into what was going on more angles than the typical viewpoint.
